The former Anfield favourite believes that Jurgen Klopp will be looking to add players, such as Timo Werner, who can make a difference in Anfield.
Liverpool don’t have to look for other places as Klopp’s homeland can be targetted and the ever wanted Werner can be brought to Anfield, admits John Barnes, with the Reds icon wondering why anyone would favour a switch to Manchester United or Chelsea above a move to Anfield.
Merseyside giants have been an attractive destination for the finest talent on Earth, but the competition to the cream of the global crop is fierce.
Missing out to other people has been a difficulty in the past, but Jurgen Klopp has found considerable value in Late windows when snapping up the likes of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson.
The German tactician is supposedly back in the market for 2020, together with RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner believed to figure prominently on his wish list, and Barnes believes sought after assets will now wait for interest from Liverpool before researching options elsewhere.
“Manchester United were in this position a few years back where players prefer to go to Manchester United compared to Liverpool. Chelsea were in that position when Mourinho was still there.
“Liverpool is in a healthy position in order that they do not have to scratch the barrel or try and get a move on because other clubs are interested – they are currently a club that everybody wants to play for.”
Barnes also believes that Liverpool are now in a position where they can cherry-pick people who want to play to your club.
Alternatives may be put into the likes of Werner, but if interest is shown in heading to Anfield then Klopp will be able to fend off rivals and bolster his ranks with people who boast the right mindset.
Ex-England international Barnes added: “They need players that want to play for Liverpool. I am sure a lot of people were later Virgil van Dijk, however, he had a complete interest in joining the Reds.”
“Because he will just go where they’re going to pay him money or he was not that committed to needing to come to play with for Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.”
