Premier League Stats: Chelsea vs Wolves

Thomas Tuchel made some changes to the starting XI by introducing Romelu Lukaku and Christian Pulisic to the attack. Ruben Loftus-Cheek started in the midfield for the Blues.

The average position of the starting XI shows that Chelsea played with two strikers upfront. Marcos Alonso had a very high attacking line on the left side.

Wolves played in a 3-5-2 formation, with Pedro Neto and Raul Jimenez leading the attack for the away side. The midfield three consisted of Joao Moutinho, Ruben Neves, and Leander Dendoncker.

By looking at the average position of the starting XI, we can observe that the Wolves played a very defensive formation in the match. They defended a lot, and the average position of most of the players was inside their half.

Chelsea had more possession of the ball and created 35 positional attacks. The Blues also made 77 recoveries, and 33 were inside the opposition’s half. When we look at the duels battle, we can observe that Chelsea have a better win percentage than their opponents. Wolves’ players attempted more smart passes and had high ball crossing accuracy.

Romelu Lukaku attempted the most shots in the match. His senior teammate, Thiago Silva, made six recoveries inside the opposition’s half and also won six aerial duels. Their German teammate, Timo Werner, attempted the most dribbles in the match and also attempted three shots.

Chelsea’s shot map shows that the Blues attempted 17 shots and managed to hit the target eight times. Of these 17 shots, 11 were attempted from inside the opposition’s penalty box. One goal was scored from the penalty spot and the other from outside the penalty spot.

Wolves players attempted 12 shots, and eight were attempted from inside the opposition’s penalty box. The visitors only managed to hit the target twice in the match.

The xT timeline shows that Chelsea created a lot of threats in the first half. They began the second half in the same manner, but Wolves gained momentum after the 60-minute mark and were the more threatening team in the last phase of the match.

Thiago Silva was the highest passer of the ball for the home team. The centre-back attempted 71 passes, 20 of which were towards Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The midfielder was also on the receiving end of most passes.

The visitors’ highest passer of the ball was Joao Moutinho. The Portuguese international attempted 45 passes, most of them towards Jonny Oto.

Chelsea players attempted four smart passes with a 75% pass accuracy rate. Christian Pulisic attempted 38 passes, and these included two smart passes. Of these 38 passes attempted by him, seven landed inside the opposition’s penalty box. The Blues attempted most of the crosses from the left side, and Timo Werner was the highest ball crosser for them.

Raul Jimenez and Pedro Neto attempted three smart passes each for the visitors. Chiquinho came off the bench and attempted the highest number of crosses for his side. The 22-year-old attempted 13 passes, and two landed inside the opposition’s 6-yard box.

The xT creation zone map shows that Chelsea created most of the threats from the left side and were also creative in the middle. Mateo Kovacic created the greatest threat to his side.

Timo Werner attempted ten dribbles and created the highest threat from dribbles for Tuchel’s men. Christian Pulisic attempted eight dribbles but was unable to create a threat from dribbles.

Wolves created most of the threats from the right side. The highest threats came from passes created by Bruno Lage’s team.

Pedro Neto was the best dribbler of the ball for the visitors. The attacking player attempted eight dribbles but created fewer threats. Francisco Trincao created the highest threat from dribbles for Wolves.

Chelsea won the highest number of defensive duels in the defensive and middle third of the pitch.

The Blues won seven aerial duels in the final third. Thiago Silva contested eight aerial duels and won six.

Thomas Tuchel’s men won seven loose ball duels in the defensive third. Their forward players and midfielders won only two of the 13 loose ball duels contested.

Rayan Ait Nouri contested ten defensive duels for his side and won four.

Wolves contested 16 aerial duels in the defensive third and won nine. Willy Boly won four aerial duels for his side.

The visitors contested most of the loose ball duels inside the opposition’s half. Leander Dendoncker won two duels for his side.

The Blues won nine corners, five from the right side. Chelsea won three free-kicks inside the opposition’s half.

 

Wolves won three corners, two from the left side. They also won three free-kicks, and two were delivered as crosses into the opposition’s penalty box.

Chelsea conceded two late goals and were unable to register a win. They have only gained two points in the last three games and are yet to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. Thomas Tuchel will expect his team to get back to winning ways for the next game.
