Chelsea travelled to Turin to face Juventus at the Allianz Stadium for the second game of Group H of the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League season.

Chelsea were on the back of a 1-0 victory at home against Zenit, while the Old Lady from Italy had travelled to Malmo to get a 3-0 victory.

Juventus beat Chelsea 1-0 through a Chiesa goal early in the second half. Both The Blues and Juventus are expected to go through this group into the knockout stages of the competition, and the result might become immaterial if Chelsea go on to win most of their remaining group games till December.

Massimiliano Allegri lined up the Juventus side in a 4-3-3 formation with Wojciech Szczesny in goal behind a back four including left-back Alex Sandro, centre-backs Mathias de Ligt and Leonardo Bonucci and right-back Danilo. The midfield three consisted of Adrien Rabiot on the left, Rodrigo Bentacur on the right and Manuel Locatelli in the middle. The three attackers playing up front were Federico Chiesa on the left, Juan Cuadrado on the right and Federico Bernardeschi through the middle.

The average positions of the Juventus players show that they stayed back and waited for the right moments to counter-attack and did not have a lot of possession in the match. The front three were dropping to help out in midfield.

Thomas Tuchel lined up Chelsea in a 3-4-2-1 formation with Ronelu Lukaku leading the line ahead of the two attacking midfielders Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz. Marcos Alonso played as the left wing-back alongside central midfielders Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic, and right wing-back Cesar Azpilicueta. Edouard Mendy started in goal behind the three centre-backs Andreas Christensen, Thiago Silva and Antonio Rudiger.

The average positions of all Chelsea players were in the opposition half, as they constantly had possession and were attacking throughout the game. They kept trying throughout the 90 minutes but were unable to score a goal.

Juventus recorded an xG of 1.39 in the match as they took a total of six shots with just the one on target for the goal. They had only 31% possession and only eight positional attacks in the match. On the other hand, the visitors had 41 positional attacks and 69% possession, taking a total of 12 shots in the match.

Bernardeschi had the highest individual xG of 0.70 in the match, while Kai Havertz had the highest xG of 0.35 for Chelsea. Lukaku and Havertz both took three shots each in the match, as Mateo Kovacic completed 27 passes in the final third.

Juventus’ shot map shows the six shots they took in the match, out of which four were taken from inside the box, including the goal.

Chelsea’s shot map shows that they took shots from both inside and outside the box in their attempt to get a goal, but we’re only able to hit the target once in the entire 90 minutes.

Juventus had to face a lot of defensive duels in their defensive areas. Matthijs de Ligt win five defensive duels for his team against Chelsea.

There were a few aerial duels to be contested for the crosses Chelsea put into the box, and Bonucci won two aerial duels for his team.

Juventus contested a few loose ball duels in their defensive third, with de Ligt making four successful loose ball recoveries in the match.

Chelsea had to face a few defensive duels all over the pitch, as their best player Kovacic won four defensive duels for them.

As mentioned earlier, there were a few aerial duels contested in the opposition box, with Lukaku winning four aerial duels for the visitors.

Chelsea won a few loose ball duels in the attacking third, with Thiago Silva making two recoveries in the match for the Blues.

Juventus’ victory takes them to the top of Group H and in pole position to go through to the knockouts. Chelsea’s defeat still sees them at second, level on points with Zenit, as they will hope to keep this second spot and join Juventus through to the next round.
