Analysis: Why Chelsea’s home form is a worrying sign for Pochettino

Chelsea are far away from being listed as a settled side. Despite all the signings and the management change, the Blues have struggled to find their rhythm in the English Premier League 2023-24 season. Pochettino’s men currently sit in 10h place and only have one win in the last five games, that too came against nine-men Spurs. The Blues produce a good result one day and struggle to repeat their performances in the next matches.

One of the reasons Chelsea players are finding it hard to find their rhythm is the inclusion of many players. The manager is forced to make changes due to injuries and game time management. Most of these players are new to English football and are finding it hard to match the pace of the game. Another reason why the Blues are struggling is their home form. Chelsea were a team to beat at home under Jose Mourinho but now taking a point away from the Bridge is more easier than gaining a point away against Chelsea.

Let’s take a look at why the Blues are struggling to find their rhythm at home and how they have underperformed in from of the home supporters.

Inconsistency in front of the goal

Chelsea are winless in the last five games at home. They have only collected six points from a possible 21 in seven home games.

The Blues have found the back of the net 22 times this season in 13 league games. At home, only 10 goals have been netted in seven games and the away record is still better. Chelsea scored four goals against Manchester City in the last four matches and that has improved their home record.

Overall, the team averages 13.3 shots with a 37.6% accuracy rate. At home, the average number of shots per match is around 14.5 with an accuracy rate nearing 35%. Despite creating more chances, Pochettino’s men have failed to find the back of the net consistently.

Leaky defence

Robert Sanchez has only kept three clean sheets and allowed 20 goals. In the last five matches, the Blues have leaked 13 goals with eight coming in the last two games.

Thiago Silva and his defensive unit have allowed the opposition to take 10.92 shots per 90 minutes this season. At home, the average is just around 11.3. Only one clean sheet in seven league games is the biggest reason behind these struggles. The likes of Brentford and Nottingham Forest have also taken three points away from the Bridge this season.

In the last three home games, the defence has allowed 33 shots and 18 were on target. The goalkeeper was beaten on his right side five times and conceded eight goals in total.

The home form is a worrying sign for Pochettino. His team is not playing in Europe and the manager still has time to think before Brighton visits them in the coming weekend.
